Transforming Education During Crisis: Empowering 700 Students in Ayawaso East Municipality

Mother of All Nations Foundation’s collaboration with United Way Ghana, Achievers Ghana, and the generous support from Cummins Inc. has yielded a remarkable impact on education amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our home tuition initiative in the Ayawaso East Municipality reached 700 basic and Junior High School students, providing them with a lifeline of education during these trying times.

The project’s core goal was enhancing literacy skills among these young learners while creating an alternative learning environment due to the closure of schools amid government-mandated safety measures. Focused on reading, phonemic awareness, writing, and speaking, our tailored materials filled the knowledge gap resulting from the pandemic. Curated with Ghanaian-context stories by dedicated volunteers, these materials received the Ghana Library Authority’s approval.

Equally important was our commitment to safety. Participants and volunteers received essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and strictly adhered to COVID-19 safety protocols throughout the project’s duration—from September 14, 2020, to November 14, 2020, with study sessions held twice a week.

This initiative responded to urgent calls from parents and guardians, deterring children from taking to the streets due to school closures. Corporate sponsors, 3M and Newmont, generously supported 700 learners with reading materials, PPE, and transportation for volunteers, illustrating a united effort in fostering education during a crisis.

Prior to the project’s launch, a pilot program in Mamobi, East Ayawaso Municipality, gauged community response. The positive feedback from participants and caregivers resonated deeply, reflecting gratitude for this intervention.

A Holistic Approach

Moreover, our commitment extended beyond education. As part of our support in fighting COVID-19, over 50 Veronica buckets were distributed across households and strategic points within the community, aligning our efforts with health and safety imperatives.

The culmination of this project showcased the incredible potential and resilience of our communities. Through education, safety measures, and community engagement, we’re fostering a brighter, more empowered future for these young minds. Together, we’re building resilience and forging paths of learning, even in the face of adversity.
