READCAMP 2022 TAKES OFF

The 2022 edition of the literacy project, ReadCamp, officially commenced on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, offering 21 days of an exciting, free and safe reading experience for children at the basic education level.

The youth-led reading program will travel across the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Volta, and Northern regions, targeting over 4000 children this year.

Children struggling to read with comprehension will get the most from the intensive remedial program to develop their skills and get prepared for a lifelong learning experience.

Each participant will receive intensive reading instruction in line with his/her needs, and participate in group tasks with other children with the same reading difficulty, helping them to realize their literacy potential.

Activities on day one of the project largely centered on the deployment of volunteers along with materials to the centers. Defying heavy downpour in the early hours of Tuesday to get the ReadCamp van moving, demonstrated the volunteers’ unflinching commitment to literacy development among struggling children in Ghana.

More exciting was the punctuality of the participants who helped with the preparation amidst the rainfall, enabling them to register for the commencement of the program.

The children were then made to read passages to ascertain their reading and comprehension abilities. Their confidence level, ability to identify letter sounds, and reading time among other skills were assessed to enable us to place them into befitting cells for effective tutoring.

The participants were assigned mentors to take them through the poem of affirmation.

While the kids may have primarily gathered for learning, it didn’t stop them from having fun.

“I enjoyed the class,” said Mariam Issah, a primary 4 student of Pantang Village Presby basic school in summarizing her experience after day one.
